The Idea

Doc Heads exists to support documentary filmmakers in all ways – through our bi-monthly nights, access to events/festivals, discounts, networking opportunities and funding opportunities. Set up in 2009 by four filmmakers as a way of introducing all our filmmaking friends to each other, it’s expanded to become one of the leading organisations in the documentary world.    Every two months, we screen a selection of the latest and best work in the field, and invite filmmakers to join us in an unpretentious evening of drinks and discussion. Here’s some of the filmmakers and films we’ve supported over our 5 years so far.
How it all began
Doc Heads began in 2009 when five filmmakers decided it would be a good idea to bring their documentary filmmaking friends together on a more regular basis. There were lots of events for new filmmakers, but we wanted to be able to catch up with our peers, share advice, see the latest films, and provide a forum for discussing new ideas and collaborations.
So Doc Heads was born.
What we do
The premise was, and still is, simple. Every two months, we get together in our Brick Lane venue. We invite filmmakers to submit their films in advance, anything from 3 to 30 minutes. The emphasis is on quality, and a programme that fits well together and will stimulate thought and debate. Each filmmaker is present at the event,
and afterwards we all head up to the bar to – well, talk and drink. You see, this isn’t one of those film events with a faceless crowd, where no-one talks to you and it’s all a bit pretentious. This is a night where you actually get to talk to people you don’t already know, where debate is encouraged, and you go away inspired and most likely a little drunk.
Join us!
Over the last year, we’ve expanded to include a host of interesting and talented people from the documentary world. We’ve grown in size from five to over 4000, and worked with Sheffield Doc/Fest, the London Short Film Festival, East End Film Festival, Open City Docs Fest, DocHouse, DirectorsUK and 4Docs. Our members include BAFTA, RTS and Emmy nominees. We’ve now launched a membership scheme where we offer our members discounts to documentary festivals, access to events, cheaper kit hire, masterclasses and commissions.
