Hunger Competition Winner: Porters

Today we conclude our fortnight of documentary shorts by presenting the winner of our competition ran in conjunction with Rankin Film Productions and Hunger TV. The filmmakers behind today’s short, Porters, were announced as the winners of the £5K fund at last night’s packed Doc Heads 30 event on Brick Lane.

Porters was directed by the trio of documentary filmmakers James Dougan, Dan Ridgeon and Max Cutting and looks at the unnoticed and unappreciated members of Britain’s National Health Service. This short documentary offers a unique insight into the joint notions of life and death through the men whose job it is to deal with them on a daily basis.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 9

Our penultimate film in the showcase of documentary shorts that are in the running for our £5K prize is Colin Furze – Inside The Mind Of An Inventor. The short was directed by filmmaker David Beazley and attempts to take us into the mind of Colin Furze,  plumber by day, but becomes an inventor in his spare time. Furze creates a whole range of unique objects and contraptions such as the Jet Bike and the World’s Fastest Mobility Scooter. Furze also holds the Guinness World Record for the World’s Fastest Pram, Longest Motorbike and biggest Bonfire!

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 8

Today’s finalist is from filmmaker Matthew Hopkins as he tells the story of Richard Roberts, a travelling piano tuner who chooses to live outdoors. With no fixed address he classes himself as working homeless – a growing group who sleep rough by night, but then get up in the morning to go to work. This fascinating tale takes an alternative look at someone who treats the entire city as a home.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 7

Chloe White’s film An All-Encompassing Light is part of our documentary shorts showcase and details the experiences of Lee of when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. While Lee is now well into his 80s we witness a tender look back in time to where he was when the bomb dropped and how it has effected his life since. Through the use of archival footage audiences gain a moving insight to show of the city of Hiroshima has changed since 1945.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 6

Sunny, a talented Brighton-based illustrator, is the focus of Beth Sabey’s film as we weave in between the realms of creativity, mental illness and the power of art. The short delves into the experiences of an artist’s psyche and shows us the inner workings of Sunny’s process. The film has had success on the festival circuit screening at this year’s BFI Future Film Festival.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 5

Our fifth finalist is JORDANNE from filmmaker Zak Razvi. It follows the life of Jordanne Whiley, a 22 year old British wheelchair tennis player, hoping to become the first British athlete to win all four tennis grand slams in one year.

It was directed by Londoner Zak Razvi who now heads up the music video department at Pulse Films. His impressive credit list includes working with renowned artists such as London Grammar (Sights), Kasabian (Stevie), Damon Albarn (Mr Tembo) Fatboy Slim (Samba du Mundo), J Cole (She Knows) and many more.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 4

Our fourth finalist is WaterAid’s Across the Tracks: Steps Towards Clean India. The film focuses on Radha Verma, a woman determined to protect her daughter after she narrowly escapes a physical attack, building one of the first toilets in Rakhi Mandi slum, home to 3,500 people. Radha’s story shows that change is possible despite the obstacles placed in her way by her urban environment.

The film was directed and produced by Catherine Feltham and highlights the issues of the Clean India campaign, which seeks to reach it’s target of providing a toilet for every household by 2019. Across the Tracks demonstrates how the goals of WaterAid can help transform lives.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 3

Devil in the Room is the third documentary short in our £5K competition. Coming from filmmaker Carla MacKinnon the film looks at the effects of sleep paralysis which is a condition where an individual wakes up from sleep but is unable to move. Fear is a side effect of the paralysis which is strongly conveyed in MacKinnon’s part-science document and part surreal art-horror film. Devil in the Room was supported by Wellcome Trust Arts Award and is part of The Sleep Paralysis Project. It has been tremendously successful on the festival circuit screening at more than 40 events, festivals and conferences.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 2

The second film in our documentary short showcase comes from filmmaker Simon Lane. Graduating from University College Falmouth in 2009 with a BA in broadcasting Simon has gone on to direct promos for clients such as Kia, Chevrolet and Converse as well as a Random Act for Channel 4 called Savages.

His entry into our documentary short competition is entitled London Shop Fronts which looks at the ever changing shop fronts of London. From old hand painted signs to neon and pun names this short follows Emily Webber as she adds images to her popular photography blog.

Hunger Competition Finalists: Day 1

Today we begin a two week journey showcasing the shortlist of ten films in the running to win £5,000 to make a documentary short. Doc Heads teamed up with Rankin Film Productions and Hunger TV to provide a unique opportunity for UK-based documentary filmmakers. We asked for short documentaries that have already been made which we then whittled down to a shortlist of ten. The winner of the grand prize will be formally announced on Friday 27th February, the night after the next Doc Heads event on February 26th details of which you can find here.

Our first short comes from London-based filmmaker Jacob Harmer who has also shot commissions for Topshop, Banana Republic and Wonderland. His entry into the competition, his short NETS, showcases his photographic style of filmmaking.
